Lost and Found

As the weather begins to change, the number of items in the school's lost and found begins to increase.  Please take a quick inventory of your child's coats, jackets, sweatshirts, hats, etc... and encourage him or her to stop by the school's lost and found.  It is located just outside the cafeteria.  Because we understand that our families work hard to secure the articles of clothing necessary for students, all classroom teachers have been asked to take students by the lost and found and have them check for known and unknown missing items.  However, and as you can see, there are still a number of items remaining.  All unclaimed items will eventually be donated, so please conduct your inventory and encourage your child to check the lost and found soon.

Random Act of Kindness

The students and staff members of Polo Road are making conscious efforts to engage in random acts of kindness all week.  This is in correlation with Random Acts of Kindness week, which began February 9, 2019.  Our goal is not to simply expect kindness from students, but rather to teach them what kindness "looks" like and "feels" like when we are the recipients and/or givers.  Ms. Davis, one of our parents is also helping out in demonstrating this.  Her random act of kindness included surprising Ms. Capers, our receptionist, with lunch from Zaxby's today!

Valentine's Day Reminders

Valentine's Day is almost upon us. Although this is an exciting time for most, please keep in mind that this is a regular school day of quality teaching and learning at PRE. As a result, there is no time designated for class parties or celebrations in honor of this day. Please refrain from sending cupcakes, ice cream, cookies or any other related items for your child's class. Teachers will, however, be happy to allow students to pass out treat bags and/or trade cards at the very end of the day. If you choose to prepare treat bags or Valentine's Day cards, be sure to include ALL students in your child's class or the treats/cards will have to be returned to students.

In order to maintain a structured school day with minimal distractions, please be aware that the Administration or Front office personnel will not deliver gifts to students, including balloons, flowers, teddy bears, etc, on Valentine's Day, February 14th. Please do not bring or have these items delivered to school for your child.

Is My Child Too Sick for School?

Within the past week, we have had to send home several sick students who have actually come to school sick.  Since we understand that it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether or not a child is too sick for school, Nurse Salcedo would like to share with families some additional information to be considered when making that decision.  If you have additional questions, please contact the nurse at 803.419.2226 ext. 30011.

Important questions to ask yourself when your child is sick
1.     Does your child’s illness keep him/her from comfortably taking part in activities?
2.     Does your sick child need more care than the staff can give without affecting the health and safety of other children?
3.     Could other children or the teacher get sick from being near your child?

If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes”, please keep your child home.

Your child should also stay home for the following:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or more: Please keep your child home for 24 hours after temperature returns to normal (98.6 degrees with thermometer) without fever reducing medicine (Tylenol or Motrin).
  • Vomiting or diarrhea: Please keep your child home until 24 hours after the last episode (without the use of medicine).  If no improvement, please see a doctor for evaluation.
  • Rash: If the cause is unknown, please check with your physician BEFORE sending your child to school.
  • Flu-like Illness: We are working with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to control the spread of flu. Please keep your child home if they have Cough, Sore Throat, or a Fever over 100 degrees and please have them evaluated by your physician.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping students and staff at Polo Road Elementary School healthy, because we know that healthy children learn better!

Girls on the Run Spring Team

We need at least one more team member to establish PRE's spring Girls on the Run (GOTR) team and online registration is still open!  GOTR is a ten-week program designed to help girls develop essential skills to navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.  The program is intended to inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind.  All girls in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate.  Those who want additional information on the program can visit www.gotrcolumbia.org.  The spring session begins February 12, 2019 and ends with a 5K on May 4.  Participants will practice directly after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (except half days) from 3:30pm-4:45pm.  The cost to participate is $150, but there are scholarships available for students who qualify.  Anyone interested in registering a 3rd-5th grade girl can click on the following registration link.  Hard copies of the application are also available at the school.
