Congratulations

Congratulations are in order for Mrs. Brandi Floyd-Francis and Mrs. Amanda Trower!  Mrs. Floyd-Francis, art teacher, and Mrs. Trower, 5th grade teacher, recently learned that they successfully completed the rigorous process of renewing their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certifications and we are so proud of them!

Wacky Science

PRE students had a special guest today and he helped them learn all about different types of science.  Students learned the difference between physical and life science and they participated in some really neat experiments.  Ask your child to share with you something he/she learned today during the Wacky Science assembly and watch this brief video clip for a glimpse into some of the learning and fun that took place.



Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week was a huge success!  Thank you to all students and staff members who participated in this week's activities.  Lots of factual information was shared with students this week regarding the importance of living a drug free life.  Check out additional photos on our Facebook page.

Fall Pictures

If you ordered fall pictures for your child, they were sent home with students this week.  Please let your child's homeroom teacher know immediately if you paid for pictures, but did not receive them.  If you paid for pictures, but are not satisfied, please return the entire package and your child can do a re-take on November 9; which is also the day when all new students and students who were absent will take their pictures.  The fall pictures must be paid for in advance and anyone wishing to place an order can get an order form in the front office or by contacting your child's teacher.

Bond Referendum

On July 24, 2018, the Richland Two Board of Trustees adopted the resolution ordering a referendum to fund the proposed amount not to exceed $468,406,000.  The bond referendum will appear on the November 6, ballot and it is asking permission to borrow funds for safety/security improvements for schools and buses, improvements to academic learning spaces, additions and improvements to arts/athletic facilities and technology infrastructure improvements.  Click on the link to view additional information and FAQs regarding the bond referendum.

Red Ribbon Week

Next week is Red Ribbon Week!  There are several planned activities in which we hope your child participates.  We will also be sharing with students throughout the week several facts regarding the importance of living a drug-free life.  See a list of the activities below and don't forget to send your child to school in crazy or mismatched socks on Monday as a gesture of socking it to drugs and staying drug free:

Pathfinder Fitness Challenge

All of Polo Road Elementary and the PTO would like to send a huge "THANK YOU!" to all those that supported this year's Pathfinder Fitness Challenge (PFC)!  Parents and students worked extremely hard this year to garner support for this very worthy cause and we are truly thankful for all efforts!  As a result of the amazing support received from the PRE community, the cumulative total collected for this year's PFC is $11,831.83!  Congratulations are also in order to Ms. Guzman's homeroom!  Her class had the highest total collected; $960!  In exchange for the monetary donations, students at PRE participated in a 30 minute run/walk today in order to promote good health and fitness.

Artwork at the State Fair

The following students had their artwork selected for the Student Art display at the S.C. State Fair.  There are typically numerous art pieces submitted from several schools in the state and very few pieces are accepted for display, so we are extremely proud of our Explorer Artists for earning such a big honor.

Make-up Days

This week, students will make up two of the missed school days due to Hurricane Florence.  School will be in session for all Richland Two schools on Thursday (October 18) and Friday, October 19, 2018. All schools will follow a normal schedule on both days. A third make-up day has been scheduled for Friday, December 21; which will also be an early release day for elementary and middle school students. Walk for Life

Polo Road Elementary had several employees participate in today's Walk for Life.  Pictured here from left to right are three of the participants; Dr. Hamilton, PRE's teacher of the year Mrs. Jackson, and Ms. Belch.  They walked in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and all those affected by this horrible disease.

Pink Out!

Students, faculty, and staff at Polo Road wore pink today in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month and several employees will participate in the 2018 Walk for Life walk/run Saturday, October 13.

Pathfinder Fitness Challenge

The Pathfinder Fitness Challenge has been postponed until Friday, October 19, and donations will be accepted until Tuesday, October 16.  Parents are still invited to come out and run/walk with students or cheer them on as they run/walk for the 30-minute time frame.  

Read Your Way to the Big Game!

SCReads.org is sponsoring a reading contest and your child could potentially win four tickets to the Clemson vs. Carolina football game by simply reading level appropriate books of his or her choice!  All participating students who read six reading-level appropriate books will qualify and be entered into this statewide contest to win the grand prize of tickets to the South Carolina vs. Clemson Football Game on November 24, 2018!  One winner will be chosen for each team.  Students must choose a team and can only enter once.  If you would like for your child to participate, please print the reading log and turn it in to your child's teacher by November 8, 2018.  For additional information regarding the contest, please visit https://screads.org/read-your-way-to-the-big-game/.

Weather Announcement

Due to the upcoming inclement weather from Hurricane Michael, Richland School District Two is canceling school on Thursday, October 11, 2018.  All schools and offices will be closed, and all school and district activities are also canceled.

4th Grade SCDNR Field Study

PRE's 4th grade students visited McCrady Training Center for a Bird Banding demonstration with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Cultural Immersion

You are invited to our PRE Cultural Immersion Night 2018.  The event will take place on Thursday, October 25, from 5:30pm - 7:00pm.  Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy some multicultural food, fun, and friendship!  Some of the highlights of this exciting evening include Globe Trotting Rotations, a Parade of Nations through our new International Corridor, and a Multicultural Potluck.  Do you have a dish, song, dance or craft that you would like to share with our school community?  If so, Please contact Mrs. Smith at tifsmith@richland2.org or Mrs. Baez at ebaez@richland2.org. You can also complete the Cultural Immersion English Form or the Cultural Immersion Spanish form and send it in to school with your child.  
Polo's diversity is one of the factors that makes it such a special place and Cultural Immersion Night is typically a very fun night and a wonderful opportunity for our families to get together to learn and celebrate each other.  We therefore hope to see you there!

Pathfinder Fitness Challenge

The annual Pathfinder Fitness Challenge (PFC) will be held this Friday, October 12.  The students are excited and have all committed to run and/or walk for a 30 minute period of time on this day.  If you would like to come out and run/walk with your child, please feel free to do so.  If you are not able to run/walk, you can also come out and serve as a cheerleader.  Check with your child's homeroom teacher to verify the time your child will be participating in the PFC.  Please also take a moment to watch this brief video from some of our PRE students who want to share with you (in English and Spanish) a bit more information regarding the PFC.

S.C. State Fair Artists

Congratulations to Jose Lopez-Medina who placed 3rd in the 3-D division and Hailey Frick who received a Merritt Award for her 2-D work of art!  These two students will have their artwork featured at this year's South Carolina State Fair.  Along with the artwork of these students who placed, Polo Road also had some additional pieces of student work selected to be put on display during the fair.  We therefore hope that you will take a moment to stop by and view all artwork while enjoying the fair this year.  

PFC Challenge

This is the last weekend for collecting donations for the upcoming Pathfinder Fitness Challenge.  Have you contacted your friends and family yet?  The students will participate in the run/walk on Friday, October 12.  Please take a moment to watch this short video for some advice from some of our Explorers regarding the Pathfinder Fitness Challenge and to learn more about some of the hows and whys of fundraising safely.

Staff Person of the Month

Congratulations are in order for Ms. Clara Nance!  Ms. Nance was elected as our October Staff Person of the Month.  Her peers and colleagues elected her for demonstrating the Character Trait of Responsibility.  As you can see, her 2nd grade students are just as proud of her as we are at PRE.  Congratulations, Ms. Nance!

Summer Reading Celebration

Students who completed the suggested summer reading assignments celebrated today!  They were rewarded for their efforts and hard work with a Game Truck, pizza, ice cream, bookmarks, and their choice of free books!  We are so proud of each student and thank all parents for supporting our efforts to foster a love for reading and books in our students.

Dancing Drum

On Monday, the students enjoyed participating in the Dancing Drums performance.  They were able to play various instruments to make music celebrating the importance of demonstrating good character.
